Canucks Alter Their Center Ice

The Vancouver Canucks have installed their new ice for the season and it has a couple changes this time around. The red line is no longer solid red, in fact they went back to a design that has been used by the team for many years. Also the arena word-mark now includes the Rogers logo which it has never included in the past. Finally, the word-marks no longer both face the broadcast cameras. Check this out and more in the NHL section!

Re-purposed Arenas - Montreal Forum

In this series we take a look at some of hockey's former arenas that have dodged the wrecking ball and taken on a new life.

Courtesy of Montreal Gazette

The Montreal Forum hosted NHL games from its opening in 1924 to its closure in 1996. The facility seated 17,959. It has been called "ice hockey's most legendary building," but today the arena is no more. But the building still stands and is still in use.

Following the departure of the Canadiens, it was determined that the building would be transformed for a brand new use; a massive movie theater complex.

Courtesy of SBSA.ca

In 1998, demolition began on the interior of the building, leaving only the outer shell which would be completely unrecognizable when the project was complete.

The theater was completed in 2001 and included a nod to its former identity. A lobby was centered around the former center ice location and a small section of original seats were placed around the circle.

Frozen Faceoff Q&A (Answered)

Over the past few months we have been taking questions from our followers and today, I have sat down to answer many of them. Hope you enjoy!

About the Site

Why did you start this site?
The site actually came about inadvertently. I had been a hockey fan for years and I love graphic design, so one day I decided to make a St. Louis Blues center ice wallpaper for computer. When it was done I posted it somewhere and a friend wanted me to make one for their favorite team, the Detroit Red Wings. After a couple more requests, I decided to make all 30 NHL ices and just threw them up on a quick blog which was simply called Painted ice. The blog sat for a year until one day I checked in on it and saw multiple messages requesting updates to the graphics. I had not given it any thought that teams might change up the designs year to year. Soon I got to work on a new set of ices and then setup a domain under the name "Frozen Faceoff."

Were you interested in the ice designs before coming up with this idea?
No, in fact I didn't even know that teams had different red line designs at the time. The only thing I ever noticed prior to starting the site was that sometimes the primary logo at center ice would change if a team updated their brand.

Did you always plan to add new things like scoreboards/goal horns to the site?
No, in 2011 when I set up Frozen Faceoff, I only planned to do NHL ices, and didn't even plan to keep that up for long. That soon expanded to include older NHL ice graphics with the help of Cory and "CanuckFanatic92" and later, the AHL. Oddly enough, the scoreboard graphics came about exactly like the center ice graphics did. I made one for myself and that turned into something more. Goal horns seemed only fitting as they were another aspect of the hockey world that often went unnoticed.

How you make the ices to display online?
The ices start out as a white background with the required hockey markings. Then the team logos, arena marks and red line designs are added creating a very clean look. The ice texture has evolved so much over the past 6 years. I have outside of one complete overhaul about 2 years in, the current texture has been around for a long time and has gone through many modifications in an effort to present a realistic ice texture while keeping the focus of the site on the actual layouts of each center ice. This fall, I plan to also include a heavily skated version of some center ices as well.

Where do you get the fonts for the arena names?
Fonts are sometimes easy to find as many are pretty generic fonts. Others take more research and require a few manual modifications. Then there are the ones that must be made up from scratch. Those are the most annoying and can be very difficult.

Do you enjoy making center ices or scoreboards more?
Center ices are generally easier to make and can be fun, but scoreboards are less repetitive and create some fun challenges. Aside from a few of the more difficult ones, I tend to enjoy making scoreboards more. Of course some of that may have to do with the fact I have been making center ice graphics for 6 years and scoreboards for only a year or so.

What scoreboard graphics has been the most difficult to recreate?
Buffalo and NY Rangers were both extremely difficult. I even had to go back and redesign much of the Rangers board after not liking the original graphic.

What are your thoughts on red line patterns in the league?
I love having a variety. I love a solid red line design with strong logos such as the Bruins but also love when teams find something that has never been done before such as the Predators.

Has any of your concept ices ever been used in real life?
Technically no. I have seen them come true before but I am quite certain it was more of a safe prediction rather than a team using my idea.

Do you prefer painted center ice designs or the in ice fabric logos?
I always love the art of having people actually paint the logos on the ice. Nothing wrong with fabric logos though.

Have you had any communication with teams during your time working with the site? Which teams are the most/least helpful?
The graphic designer from the Utica Comets has been very helpful and even sent us the actual layout for both the Comets and the All Star center ice designs. The whole organization over there is a class act. Ironically, the least helpful team has been my own St. Louis Blues. I have reached out multiple times in the last several years, long before complaining about them, and was ignored every single time. They were the only team that did not even have the courtesy to respond to any email, tweeet or DM I have sent.

Do you make ice textures for use in NHL 2004 on the PC?
I have never made those. I actually never owned a hockey game on the PC so I wasn't even aware of this practice for quite some time. By then, plenty of people were taking care of the PC hockey gamer's needs.

Have you ever considered doing basketball courts or football fields?
No, I have limited knowledge of basketball and football. I believe there are already a couple individuals out there who do something similar though.

Why don't you have an NHL Jersey section.
NHL Uniforms and Chris Creamer already have you covered in that department. I could never complete with their outstanding work.

What are some of your favorite and least favorite center ices in the NHL and AHL?
So tough. For the NHL I love the Bruins and Rangers center ices, and really do not like the Kings, Devils and Capitals center ices. For the AHL, I love the Comets center ice but do not like the Bears, Checkers and Wolves ices.

Has your work been featured on any sports sites?
Yes, our work has been featured a few times. ESPN UniWatch, TSN Bardown (for our scoreboards) and PuckDaddy.

Who do you think has the best/worst goal horn in the league?
I think Chicago has a pretty awesome goal horn. Carolina has my least favorite.

What teams (NHL, AHL, ECHL, CHL) do you think need a re-brand the most?
This may be unpopular but I really do not like the Kings 'home plate' design. In the AHL, the Barracuda logo still has to be a joke. Beyond the AHL there are just too many teams I would like to see re-branded.

Off Topic.

What's your favorite sports team?
Let's Go Blues!

Can you do a voice reveal?
I have no intentions of doing a 'voice reveal' specifically, though I would not mind going on a podcast at some point.

What are your thoughts on an NHL or AHL team in KC?
I do not want to see another NHL team in Missouri but an AHL team would be perfect. I would hope that St. Louis (who is currently without an AHL team) is working on a plan to make this happen.

Who do you think has the best scoreboard in the NHL?
I am a big fan of the Oilers board. The size and design are great while maintaining 4 equal sides.

Would you like to see all teams end up with a Cowboy Stadium style scoreboard eventually?
Oh please, no! I really do not like having the screens on the end of the boards being so much smaller. The one in Tampa Bay is probably the worst.

Summer Of Arena Construction

This summer, a few NHL arenas are getting some TLC. Here is a quick look at all of the arenas that are under some sort of construction.

Little Caesars Arena in Detroit: Obviously this is the biggest construction project going on. The arena is set to open in just under 3 months. This summer they are working on finishing up the concourses and suites, as well as installing the 44 foot scoreboard and other LED boards. The arena's first event will be a Kid Rock concert.

Scottrade Center in St. Louis: Next to building a new arena, the home of the Blues is under about as large of a construction project you can ask for. This summer is year one of a 3 year renovation process. Currently the rink floor has been ripped out and a new ice plant will soon be installed. The center hung scoreboard has already been removed as well as the ribbon board and sound system, all of which will be replaced later this summer. Many seats on one end have been removed to make way for a new theater box seating area. Before the summer is up, the building will also get a brand new sports lighting system. The building will re-open early September.

Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg: Formerly known as MTS Centre, the home of the Jets will have a brand new name and new Reazzo floors in the concourses. It also appears that some walls and other elements of the concourses are seeing some upgrades but at the moment we do not have any official word on that.

We will have more updates soon on arena construction as well as some new scoreboard graphics for both Detroit and St. Louis.

LCA Scoreboard Update

There's just under three months left until the Little Caesars Arena is open for business. Work continues on much of the interior of the building including what will be the NHL's largest video scoreboard. The massive board will be 44 feet in length on all four sides. The LEDs will provide a gap-less display from corner to corner in stunning HD quality.

Below is our rendering of the new board along side the old scoreboard from the Joe Louis Arena. Obviously fans will be blown away by the size when they walk in for the first time.

Scottrade Center Renovation Update

This summer marks the first of the three summers of renovations to the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. For a full list of improvements, head over to the list at The BlueZone.

In just the first three weeks of construction, the old scoreboard, LED rings and sound system were removed. Once that was complete, the floor that houses the ice rink was jack-hammered and removed, leaving a 4 foot hole the size of an Olympic size rink.

Over the next couple weeks, a new ice plant will be built and new coolant lines will replace the old ones that were in the concrete. Once that process is done, new concrete will be poured. It should take approximately 30 days for that concrete to cure which means no work can be done on the event floor during that time.

Another current work in progress is the preparations for the new Theater Box seating. Several sections of seats have already been removed, as well as the suites behind them to make way for this new amenity.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Predators Announce 20th Anniversary Logo

The Nashville Predators may have fell short in the Finals, but the celebration is only getting started for this team. This fall they will begin celebrating their 20th Anniversary with an interesting new commemorative logo in two different variations.

So naturally here at Frozen Faceoff, we have made a couple concepts of what these logos could look like at center ice next year.

Whether or not they decide to use either of these logos on the ice is another question. So far, the Predators have yet to use an anniversary logo on the ice. You can see a full history of Nashville's center ices here.

Light Up The Roof

The Little Caesars Arena roof may not be going over well with Red Wings fans or Detroit residents, but what's happening under that roof is truly impressive. The arena was said to have a lowered grid system with mesh between the rafters to make a more intimate looking room. Now we have learned that those very rafters will light up with some dynamic LED lighting and can be adjusted in just about as many colors and designs that you could imagine. This will allow for a completely overhauled arena atmosphere for each individual event. We will continue to follow this story for more information.

The Impossible NHL Logo Quiz

Many of you have probably seen the “Hardest NHL logo quiz” going around. While it is somewhat difficult for some teams overall it’s not too hard as evident by a majority of people I’ve seen take it getting scores in the 20’s. So I got to photoshopping the NHL logos making minor changes to truly make the hardest NHL logo quiz. So hard I decided to call it impossible. While it may not look like it there is at least one difference in every logo. If there’s a problem with the quiz feel free to message me on twitter @n2balex

Let There Be Light In Hockeytown

This week Daktronics turned on the giant video boards in Little Caesars Arena for the first time. While they are still testing and setting up the board, it is a site for sore Red Wing fan's eyes after years of looking at one of the most outdated scoreboards in the league.

It seems as though they are having trouble getting the bottom right corner of one side to work but, have no worries, it will be up and running very soon.

Golden Knights First Ice

The Vegas Golden Knights will be practicing in the brand new City National Arena which just installed it's first sheet of ice. Aside from being a milestone for the facility, it also gives us our very first look at the new Knights logo on ice. So is this what the center ice at T-Mobile Arena will look like excluding the arena name?

Here it is with the T-Mobile Arena wordmark.

DC Arena Renamed

There is a name change in our nation's capital, home of the Capitals, Capital One is the subject of the change. Seeing a trend? Well the Washington Capitals arena has been renamed Capital One Arena. This is not the first name change this arena has gone through though. It's original name was MCI Center before changing to Verizon Center. Both previous names led fans to refer to the arena as "The Phonebooth," but that will now come to an end. However this new name may lead people to call it the "Cap Centre" or "Capital Centre," a nod to the Capitals original home, "Capital Centre."

Lets take a look at what center ice might look like with a couple concepts.

Welcome To The Bear Den

Today we are introducing a new section of the site, dedicated to Bruins fans, called The Bear Den. This site is still very much in its early stages and is only a shell of what I have planned for it. This site is going to be all about the intricacies of the Boston Bruins from the rafters down to the center ice. My goal is to talk about almost every detail. If you're looking for talk about how the players on the ice perform look somewhere else, as this site is all about those other details that make Bruins games some of the most entertaining in the NHL.

With that out of the way I should probably introduce myself. My name is Alex, some of you may know me as N2B Goal Horns on YouTube. I'm from just outside Manchester, NH and I've been a Bruins fan my entire life. I've always loved the little details of hockey games, especially goal horns. That lead me to recreating goal horns on YouTube and then creating more and more intricate graphics for them and now I'm here. I can't wait to start talking about the most nerdy parts of  Bruins games with you all.

Re-purposed Arenas - Maple Leaf Gardens

$
0
0

In this series we take a look at some of hockey's former arenas that have dodged the wrecking ball and taken on a new life.

This time we are taking a look at the Historic Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. This historic arena was built in 1931 as a replacement for the Toronto Maple Leafs' rather small Arena Gardens. The old arena only seated 7,500 for hockey, a number which would nearly double to 14,500 in the new arena when including standing room areas.

Maple Leaf Gardens housed the Leafs from 1931 to 1999 before being replaced by their current home, the Air Canada Centre. While this could have been the end of this legendary building, it was only the beginning of a new chapter.

Courtesy of NHL.com

The Leafs had no interest in selling the facility to anyone that might try to directly compete with Air Canada Centre, and subsequently turned down offers from an OHL owner. After many other proposals, the final decision would be made to split the facility in one of the most unique and challenging ways.

Today Maple Leaf Gardens continues to operate as a hockey arena in the upper half, several stories above what was once the floor for the Maple Leafs. The building's iconic ceiling is still intact and the arena has never looked better.
Courtesy of betweenthepipes.ca

As for the lower level... Believe it or not, the old rink floor is now Loblaws, a large grocery store. While it may seem that all is lost of what was once center ice, there is still one reminder of this historic location. A 12 inch red circle marks the location of the old center ice dot, right in the middle of one of the store's many aisles.
