2013 Year In Review

$

It was a busy year for us at Frozen Faceoff. Though we have been around for two and a half years, this year was a new page for the site as we took on more leagues and more projects than ever before. Here is a look at some highlights.

We started the year with a brand new logo which used an existing font but was re-branded with red line red and blue line blue. A new emblem was introduced that incorporated a face-off dot with the sites initials. In August the old font was replaced with a more modern font.

This year the site was expanded to include some new leagues and even got a new section devoted to college ices. This was one of the top requested features from our site survey.

We also introduced a new type of graphic to our site this year. The full rink graphics complete with authentic board and on ice ads, and even arena lighting. We hope to have many more of these in the future!

Finally I want to thank all of our viewers for their comments, suggestions, and frequent site visits. Frozen Faceoff would be nothing without you! Also I want to thank Cory and CF92 for their dedicated work to help improve accuracy around the site as well as research and develop numerous graphics. Without them this site would not half but a forth of the graphics that it currently has.

I wish you all a Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing what the new year brings!

Latest Ice Trend - Center Dot Designs

Every once in a while we see new trends in NHL ice designs. In recent years, team logos in the red line became a popular trend. This season we have seen two examples of what could become the next trend in ice designs. Jet Ice has made the ice logos and markings for this year's Winter Classic as well as the Stadium Series games.

@JetIceHockey - Winter Classic Center Ice Dot
The Stadium Series games have a Coors Light emblem inside the center faceoff dot. The Winter Classic center dot was actually a blue snowflake. Could this just be something special for the outdoor games? Could we see this inside arenas as well in the near future. It is hard to say at this point but it does seem like something that could be showing up a lot more in future seasons.

What are your thoughts on center dot designs? Comment below!

Get Well Soon Avs' Goal Horn

In the January 30th game at Pepsi Center against the Minnesota Wild, the Avalanche nearly destroyed their goal horn. I guess it really says something about a team that in the past has had troubles scoring. They are now tied for 5th in the league in goals this season and their goal horn is feeling the effects. Here is a compilation of goal horn audio from the game.

All About The NHL Goal Horns

As a hockey fan, we all notice the goal horns at games. They can accompany the greatest
excitement for a hockey fan, or the greatest disappointment if you are rooting for the away team. Every NHL arena has one... or do they??? In this two part series I will share some information, photos, and audio clips of all of the NHL goal horns. I have spent the last couple years compiling bits and pieces about as many horns as possible. You would think I would have much more info than this on them over that amount of time, but it turns out that many teams and arena's are not too eager to give out too much information about their game entertainment center piece. Most teams responded to me with at least a little information. To those teams I am very thankful! There are a few teams that failed to respond to any of my emails, and I must say that I was quite surprised and disappointed at their public relations practices.

First of all here are a few fun facts about goal horns:

  • Chicago was the first team to use a goal horn back in the 70's.
  • In 1996, the NHL responded to the use of goal horns with a new set of rules regarding horns and music and when and how loud they could be played.
  • Two NHL teams currently use a recording of a goal horn rather than using a real horn. One of those teams will be discussed in part 1, the other in part 2.
  • Most of the leagues goal horns live up in the rafters, many of them out of sight.
  • Several teams have horns that were originally on a vessel.
  • In most cases, goal horns are NOT triggered by the controls that run the scoreboard. They are in no way tied into that system.
  • Many teams that relocate to a new arena will bring their old goal horn along with them.
Ok, enough with that, lets get on to the individual teams!

UPDATE: Fred Berry has done a lot of research on horns and has found out the type of horn used for many of the teams. These updates can be found it both Part 1 and 2 in red text) Thank you Fred!

Anaheim Ducks - Honda Center
Horn: Real
Type: Ibuki 200 diaphone fog horn.

Boston Bruins - TD Garden
Horn: Audio Clip of Kahlenberg model KM-135
Source: Bruins Entertainment Representative
Additional Info: It is very possible you have heard this exact horn recording used in other rinks. Many local rinks use this horn, as do some minor leagues and even some teams in the KHL. I would imagine this is the most copied goal horn clip out there. Time for Boston to get a real horn, don't you think?

Buffalo Sabres - First Niagara Center
Horn: Real
Type: Similar to the Kahlenberg F-3 Yaght Horn
Location: Somewhere in the rafters near center ice.
Additional Info: It is an old boat horn that has been tied to an air compressor. It is the same horn that was used in the Aud before the Sabres moved to the new arena.

Calgary Flames - Scotiabank Saddledome
Horn: Real
Type: Buell plastic "Lifeguard" 4-chime horn-sets. (Now sold by Horn-blasters)
Location: In the catwalk high above the Flames Energy Board (scoreboard)
Additional Info: There are actually two goal horns in the Saddledome. The second is used for Calgary Hitman games and is located next to the Flames horn. They each have their own separate air compressor.

Carolina Hurricanes - PNC Arena
Horn: Real
Type: Similar to Kahlenberg Model Q-4 Horn
Location: In the catwalk above the ice.
Additional Info: This is the same horn that the Hartford Whalers used before moving to Carolina.
Source: Fans from Florida Panther's message board.
Photo: It is very hard to see the horn through the cat walk in this photo. Look for 3 trumpet shaped horns in the center of photo. I am including a photo from Kalenberg's site of a similar T-3 Horn.

Chicago Blackhawks - United Center
Horn: Real
Type: Kahlenberg Q3
Location: Mounted under the center ice scoreboard. It is perhaps the leagues easiest to find!
Additional Info: It is the same horn that was mounted under the scoreboard at the old Chicago Stadium. The Blackhawks were the first team to use such a horn to celebrate a goal, thus beginnin the goal horn era.

Dallas Stars
Horn: Real
Type: Similar to a Kahlenberg KDT-123

Detroit Red Wings
Horn: Real
Type: Buell reed horn sets (These used high pressure reeds instead of diaphragms)
Additional Info: We use a real goal horn -- not a recording. In fact, we test it before every game before doors open.
Location: Up in the rafters above the neutral zone. There are two sets of horns which are clearly visible from many sections of the arena.

Edmonton Oilers
Horn: Real
Type: Airchime 2-tone for truck usage
Location: Catwalk area above the scoreboard.
Additional Info: Oilers/Rexall Place Goal Horn is an actual air horn located in the ceiling of the building. It is triggered by just a click of the mouse from the arena's DJ. It will automatically blow for the preset time and shut itself off.

Florida Panthers
Horn: Real
Type: Kahlenberg D2 x 2 (2 sets on 360° bracket)
Location: Catwalk area above the scoreboard.
Additional Info: As you can see in the picture below, it would appear that one of the horns has some significant damage. I am very curious as to what caused that!

Los Angeles Kings
Horn: Real
Type: Airchime K3, Canadian-voiced, bells, 1,2,3.
Location: In the rafters. Not sure if its over scoreboard or somewhere else.
Additional Info: There are actually two real horns that make the noise.

Minnesota Wild - Xcel Energy Center
Horn: Real
Type: Kahlenberg Q3
Location: Mounted just above the corner of the arena where smoke is emitted after each goal.
Additional Info: Many people take photos of the smoke assuming that the goal horn is in the picture, but often it is in plain site but just outside the photo.

Montreal Canadiens - Bell Centre
Horn: Real
Type:  Airchime M3H - only two highest pitched bells blowing, lowest is fouled.
Location: These horns are powered by a large compressor and air tank and are mounted on the technical grid above the scoreboard at center ice.
Additional Info: We do not have a recording of it, many have tried to imitate and some have gotten close, but each horn has it's own personality.

Nashville Predators - Bridgestone Arena
Horn: Real
Type: Similar to a Kahlenberg f-3
Location: Mounted in the rafters above the south end of the arena.

New Jersey Devils - Prudential Center
Horn: Real
Type: Kahlenberg Cruise Ship Air Horn
Location: Mounted in the catwalk above the scoreboard.
Additional Info: The horn from the meadowlands was a recording that sounded completely different.
Source: Event Production Director

New York Islanders - Nassau Coliseum
Horn: Real
Type: Kahlenberg T2
Location: Somewhere up in the rafters. I was not given the exact location.
Additional Info: "During the games, I sit up in the press box (near the blimp) to direct the game. Once the Islanders score a goal, I push a button which is electronically hooked up to the horn. Each time I want to blow the horn, I push and hold down the button to have the horn last as long as I want it to."
Source: Game Operations/Event Manager

New York Rangers - Madison Square Garden
Horn: Recording
Additional Info:  Hard to swallow the fact that the Worlds Most Famous Arena has a fake goal horn. Here is what I know about the situation. "The old goal horn from prior to the 1990s still resides in the arena, but it has not been used since the Goal Song came into play. The goal horn is now part of the recorded music that goes right into the Goal Song. You would not be able to spot the [old] goal horn from seats in the arena, so it's probably not worth being distracted from a game to look for one.”
Source: NYR Webmaster

Ottawa Senators - Scotiabank Place
Horn: Real
Type: Airchime M3H - Only bottom two bells blowing, third bell is fouled.
Location: Mounted in the rafters above center ice.
Additional Info: The goal horn is an original VIA horn consisting of three horns. It sits high up in the rafters above center ice. “Our pattern is two longs, two shorts, and a long. Occasionally I'll do three or four shorts depending on events (like Alfie's 400th) but that's the standard that I was taught. It's more difficult than it sounds because attempting to meld the long & short so they're continuous, but distinct is difficult. My first horn ever was AWFUL. So much that my partner's phone rang and it was a friend of his wanting to know what had gone wrong.”
Source: Goal Horn Operator - You can read more about it at http://www.silversevensens.com

Philadelphia Flyers - Wells Fargo Center
Horn: Real
Type: 2 Kahlenberg S-203C Air Horns
Location: High above center ice up in the catwalk.
Additional Info: Once triggered, the sound pressure level will exceed 140dB, producing a powerful, low frequency blast, reminiscent of a cruise ship.

Phoenix Coyotes - Jobing.com Arena
Horn: Real
Type: Kahlenberg D2 x 2 (360° bracket)
Location: Mounted to the bottom of the rafters above one of the faceoff dots in the neutral zone.
Horns are located to the top right of the scoreboard.

Pittsburgh Penguins - Consol Energy Center
Horn: Real
Type: Airchime KMJ (!!) This is musically the prettiest!!
Location: Hanging down from the rafters on one end of the ice.
Additional Info:  This is the same horn that was used at Mellon Arena.
Source: There is a video about the horn from when Consol first brought the horn over. View it here

San Jose Sharks - HP Pavilion
Horn: Real
Type: Kahlenberg Triton S-120
Location: The horn's physical location is on the catwalk above 207. You can't really see it unless you are in the catwalk above the ice.
Additional Info: While no known photo of the actual Sharks horn exists, here is a video showing a horn of the same model. Youtube
Source: Director of Even Presentation

Saint Louis Blues - Scottrade Center
Horn: Real
Type: 2 Kahlenberg S-203C Horns
Location: Both are located in the catwalk above the scoreboard at center ice.
Additional Info: They point in opposite directions. The horns came from an old ocean-liner that was being scrapped. They are actually only set to 40% airflow. Imagine if they were at 100%!
Source: Scottrade Staff

Tampa Bay Lightning - Tampa Bay Times Forum
Horn: Real
Type: Kahlenberg S-203C
Additional Info: I believe we secured it from one of the shipyards here in the Port of Tampa several years ago.

Toronto Maple Leafs - Air Canada Centre
Horn: Real
Location: It is in the media gondala.
Source: Fan Services

Vancouver Canucks - Rogers Arena
Horn: Real
Type: 2 Airchime KM models (Bent bell-necks) and one K1L,2L,3L 3-chime which is well overridden by the former pair!!
Location: Catwalk above the scoreboard
Additional Info: The goal horn is powered by compressed air and does live in the rafters above the centre video board however you will not be able to see it from seats in the bowl. And it is actually tuned to match the sound of the horn on BC Ferries.
Source: Game Entertainment Coordinator
Flickr: John Bollwitt

Washington Capitals - Verizon Center
Horn: Real
Type: Kahlenberg F-3
Location: In the rafters right above/near the Georgetown NCAA Championship banner.
Additional Info: The siren is leftover from the old Capital Centre/USAir Arena days. When the team moved from Landover to Chinatown, the siren went with them. However, when Ted Leonsis bought the team, he introduced the horn with much fanfare but the longtime fans wanted the siren back instead. Ted wasn't going to back down on the horn he bought so that's why the Caps now have both a horn and a siren.

Winnipeg Jets - MTS Centre
Horn: Real
Additional Info: There is a real goal horn. It is the same one that was used by the Manitoba Moose and was also used in the Winnipeg Arena. It is controlled with an old modified flashlight casing.

POLL: Red Lines In NHL

There are often complaints about the red line cutting through team logos and not having much use. Often we only hear complaints about this but those who are in favor of it are never heard from. Or maybe there are no fans of the red line. At any rate, I wanted to find out so please participate in this poll. Thanks!

New Look For Blues?

A couple weeks ago SportsLogos.net posted a mockup of a leaked logo that a viewer claimed to have seen. It was thought to be a possible new logo for the Blues going into next season. You can view their article here. There have been rumors of a change in logos and uniforms for a year or two now. I am a diehard Blues fan, and while I could see some benefit in tweaking the uniforms, the logo is PERFECT as is. I am fine with making alternate logos but the primary should always be current Blue Note.

At any rate, here is my mockup of what the logo might look like at center ice. Lets just hope it doesn't happen...

Red Wings Sign Their Last Lease At The Joe

Detroit Free Press: The Michigan Strategic Fund voted Tuesday to approve $6 million in demolition funds to raze Joe Louis Arena once the Detroit Red Wings move into a new arena on the north end of downtown.

Under terms of the agreement for the demolition funds, the new arena must be built before the demolition money would be freed up for use. The demolition funds would eventually be repaid to the Strategic Fund through new tax revenues captured by the city in the downtown district.

The exact cost of the demolition is not yet known. The $6-million estimate approved Tuesday could go as high as $10 million, although MSF staff said the cost is expected to be closer to the $6 million or even less than that.

Third Anniversary!

It is hard to believe that this site has been active for three years now! What started as a personal wallpaper for my computer has turned into a historic archive of center ice that spans for decades in the NHL, plus many AHL, KHL and ices from many other leagues. I am very thankful for all the hard work that CanuckFanatic92 and Cory Gibson has put in on research and development of the NHL graphics which transformed my small collection into a 99% complete NHL archive. Their time and dedication are the reason this site is still going today. Also I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the fans of our site and our followers on the social networks. From your viewership to your reference photo submissions, you have all helped to make this site bigger and better!

Finally, I thought it would be fun to show you all a couple snapshots of what this site looked like in the early days. These snapshots were taken long before most of our fans had even heard of the site. Needless to say it has come a long way since then.

Hurricanes Discuss Center Ice Design

In a recent edition of a recurring 'Tweetmail' feature on the Carolina Hurricanes web site, a fan asked why the Hurricanes chose not to go with a two logo center ice design as other teams have done in the past. They went into great detail about this decision and discussing some other designs that they have used in the past. Below is their answer from team rep Michael Smith as well as a few of our center ice designs added in as reference.

I found this question intriguing. The Canes have featured a large logo at center ice for years, and there’s not been much consideration to change it to a Montreal-style two-logo placement. Here’s why: The main reason is that the Canes’ primary logo is tilted, while the Canadiens’ logo is horizontal. Taking into account the tilt, the Canes’ logo would be much smaller squeezed into either semi-circle at center ice. The other is that Montreal’s logo, which features a C and an H, is read with the eye quite naturally. The correct way to view the Canes’ logo, on the other hand, isn’t quite as intrinsic. In short, the primary logo appears best as a large, dominant feature at center ice.

Aside from the RBC Center to PNC Arena transformation around the center ice circle, the Canes have had a few different center ice logos in the last six years. While the primary logo has been the main feature, the Canes have also highlighted the tenth anniversary logo (2007-08), the secondary warning flag logo when the third uniform set was unveiled (2008-09) and the All-Star logo (2010-11).

Michael went on to mention and link to our site thanks to the advice of Jared, the team's ice technician. We greatly appreciate this and please be sure to check out their site for more interesting topics covered in their Tweetmail.

Early Look At NHL 15 Ice Accruacy

$

As the first screens and videos were released of the upcoming EA Sports NHL title, I obviously started to pay attention to the ice graphics to see how realistic they were. Given that the arena's so far have looked amazingly accurate, I imagined that the center ice designs would be equally authentic. However so far there have already been some glaring issues with several ices that we have seen. Of course it's early on and some photos/videos could be earlier builds but often these early issues end up in final product. It is not my intent to run down EA or their game in this article, but simply bring attention to these inaccuracies so that perhaps they will notice and correct them so that we end up with as many authentic ices as possible. Lets get started.

Boston Bruins
It is so nice to once again see the TD Garden logo on the ice for only the second time in hockey video game history. However what seems to be absent is the Bruins logos inside the red line. This is just one of several arenas so far that seem to have a solid red 'generic' red line. Of course this line has been used in the past and was in the game last year so its not a stretch to see it in the game this year.

Detroit Red Wings
So far it is hard to see much but from the screen shot EA released, I cannot see any problems.

Los Angeles Kings
Looks great!

Montreal Canadiens
The arena name is still there but look at that red line. That is not even last year's red line in NHL 14. That was the red line from NHL 13. Where did that even come from?

Pittsburgh Penguins
There's that generic red line showing up again. It is worth noting that the Penguins have used the same diamond red line since 1995, and recent versions of the game have had it right. Hopefully this is just a sign of a very early build.

I will update this page as we see more center ice designs from the game.

San Jose Sharks
Another solid red line where it shouldn't be, but isn't it nice to see an actual arena name on the ice at San Jose?

TD Garden Quietly Upgrades LEDs

Usually arenas upgrade their technology during the off-season and a press-release gets the fans all hyped up. Boston had other ideas in mind though. It would appear that the Bruins removed the lower 360 'old school' signage during short break between preseason and the home opener to the 2013/14 season. For the first few games a bare wall with brackets could be seen where the old back-lit signs were once hung in a continuous circle around the arena bowl.  It likely went less noticed due to the fact that the Garden already had one LED ribbon board one level up. Now the Bruins are sporting a brand new second LED ribbon board that wraps around both sides of the arena, stopping only for the out of town scoreboards on the ends.

Old advertising panels have been removed.

'Old school' back-lit ad panels circling the arena prior to October 2014.

Remember The Blue Ice Experiment?

Remember that time way back in 2005, during the lockout, when the concept of a blue ice rink came up? The idea behind it was to make the game more friendly for television, particularly high-definition TV. Along with the obvious blue tint, the blue lines would become orange, and the red line would become blue. The lines would also be thicker, which along with the color changes, would make it easier for officials to make quick and accurate calls on the ice.

Obviously this idea never went very far. The HSBC Arena in Buffalo gave it a try and it was used for an AHL game that was played there that season. Perhaps you are wondering why I bring up this old story in 2013...

I wanted to see what it might look like today had the new ice went into effect. The results are actually quite awful and further convinces me that they made the right call. Never-the-less, I thought I would share some of the possibilities with the Frozen Faceoff Community.

Forgotten Anniversaries Part 3

It is not uncommon to see anniversary logos on ice, but I thought it would be fun to take a look back at just some of the team's anniversary logos that never made it to center ice. What might they look like? Why didn't they paint it at center ice? Sometimes it is clear that they used good judgement in not using their celebratory logo at center ice. Let's take a look at part 3 of this series...  (also view Part 1 and Part 2)

New Edmonton Arena Concepts

A new arena is coming to downtown Edmonton in 2016, and now that arena has a name. Rogers Communications has purchased the naming rights for the future home of the Edmonton Oilers. It will be called Rogers Place.

The announcement comes on the heels of a new 12-year, $5.2-billion media rights agreement between the Rogers and the NHL. The deal, which is the largest in NHL history, gives Rogers national rights to all NHL games on all of its platforms in all languages.

Our thanks to Jacob New for pointing us to this story and suggesting we make some concepts for the new arena.  Here we go...
