The Joe Gets A Digital Upgrade

Its odd that the Wings would put any money into the Joe Louis Arena at this point. With a new arena in the planning phase, upgrades to signage seems strange. However, it all has to do with advertising so in theory the money will come right back.

I am referring to the recent replacement of the signage above the arena bowl entrances from the concourse. All of the tunnels are now topped off with an LED sign that can display a wide variety of rotating ads. These replace the old backlit panels that had been in place for years and could only display one ad each for a single event.

They have also added a third LED display to the boards just to the left of the away team bench.

Where Is The Lower LED Ring?

I get this question so often that I thought I should address it in its own post. I'll start by saying that I have no inside information from The Garden or the Rangers, but here are my thoughts on the scoreboard.

It has come to the attention of many fans who have watched the three year transformation project unfold, that the scoreboard dose not match the renderings that were drawn up. While the concept of the scoreboard seems to follow the guidelines set by the renderings, whether they were supposed to or not, the board did turn out quite different. My gut tells me that the renderings were only to be a general idea of what the new scoreboard might look like. The renderings were drawn up nearly four years ago, and in that time there have been big changes in the scoreboard industry. At the time of the drawings, Carolina and Dallas were probably unveiling their new scoreboards. The latter was the most state of the art scoreboard in the league at the time. Who would have predicted at that time that we would have a scaled down version of the Cowboys Stadium scoreboard in an NHL arena. Obviously that style would be all wrong for MSG.

Top left photo from
Several years later, they opted for a few changes that included a much more rounded structure. Even the main video screens are in a somewhat circular setup. As for the lower ring... well it would block the view of a very important new aspect of the new scoreboard. There are four video screens inside the scoreboard to accommodate fans who are seated court-side or rink-side. They clearly took a lesson from Staples Center and the size of their board.  Below is a photo of how big the scoreboard is compared to the basketball floor.

While Staples Center still got away with a lower ring, The Garden doesn't have the same luxury of a great deal of working height, especially in the center portion of the arena. The current setup takes up a bit less vertical space, and the video board can be raised up inside the upper ring for minimal exposure during events where it is not needed.

What are your thoughts on the new scoreboard? Comment below...

It is time for part three of a lengthy series that compares center ice designs that appear in video games to their real life counterpart.
You can view the rest of the series here.

This time around we will fast forward to the most recent NHL release, NHL 14 by EA Sports. It was released on September 10th. Keep in mind that at the time of it's production, they did not know what the 2013/14 ices would look like.

Concepts: Think Outside The Circle

I thought I would switch things up a bit with this concept post. Pretend for a moment that logos do not have to stay inside the center circle. These were designed with humor and creativity in mind, but who knows, maybe you will like one or two of them...

The Impossible Red Line

@debbiroy7
Well this is one ice that I will never be able to re-create to 100% accuracy. That is because the Manchester Monarchs came up with the most clever and unique red line design I have ever seen. The players teamed up with Make-A-Wish New Hampshire to paint the red line without the use of brushes. Instead the red line is filled with children's hand prints who got to visit the arena and the players while the ice was in the painting process.

Below is a recreation of the ice though the hand-prints are obviously not going to be authentic.

Habs Subtle Red Line

I missed this red line change in my initial attempt at the Canadiens' 2013/14 season center ice graphic. I thought it was the same as last year but in fact, they changed it to a much more subtle primary logo pattern. This year the logo is red, just like the red line. We only know it is there thanks to a small white border around the edges. Personally I think they should have went with a solid red line or back to last year's design. I am watching my Blues play there right now and you can barely even tell they have a design on their red line on TV.  What do you think?  Click here to view 2014 center ice graphic.

NHL Section Refresh

You may have noticed some NHL graphics are brighter and more crisp now on the NHL section of the site. This is part of a site wide project to make the ices look more like what they would under professional venue lighting. The bonus to that is they also display better when browsing through all the thumbnails. Right now the 2014 ices are all new, and I am working on updating all the teams but this will take some time. Additionally we are trying to include other details such as the 50 foot neutral zone dating back to the lockout, the 54 foot neutral zone from 1998 to 2004 and the 58 foot neutral zone prior to 1998.

After the NHL section is done, I do intend to update other sections of the site as well.

Here is the current progress. I will do my best to keep this updated though it will not always appear at the top of the page unless there is a major update to announce.

If you haven't already checked out CF92's NHL Scoreboards, you are missing out on the incredible work of a talented graphic designer! He has recreated old scoreboards from every NHL team's past with incredible attention to the smallest detail. Hurry on over and check out his site, you wont be disappointed!

The future of this site is a bit uncertain as he hopes to move on to current NHL scoreboards. At this time he would like to reach out for some help on some hi-res graphics to put on the video screens. Here is an post from his site...

I plan on doing all 30 current NHL scoreboards but I will need help with these, because they simply do not look appealing if they just have a team logo slapped onto the graphic and I call it a day (it doesn’t work that way in today’s world!), in that case I already asked for help on The Breakaway but got no answers.
Below is an example of what is to come:

That doesn’t do much if it’s either turned off or just a gigantic ass Lightning logo slapped on there, right?

If you are interested in helping create some hi-res graphics for these scoreboards, please follow this link to have him contact you with more information.

TD Garden Quietly Upgrades LEDs

Usually arenas upgrade their technology during the off-season and a press-release gets the fans all hyped up. Boston had other ideas in mind though. It would appear that the Bruins removed the lower 360 'old school' signage during short break between preseason and the home opener to the 2013/14 season. For the first few games a bare wall with brackets could be seen where the old back-lit signs were once hung in a continuous circle around the arena bowl.  It likely went less noticed due to the fact that the Garden already had one LED ribbon board one level up. Now the Bruins are sporting a brand new second LED ribbon board that wraps around both sides of the arena, stopping only for the out of town scoreboards on the ends.

Old advertising panels have been removed.

Remember The Blue Ice Experiment?

Remember that time way back in 2005, during the lockout, when the concept of a blue ice rink came up? The idea behind it was to make the game more friendly for television, particularly high-definition TV. Along with the obvious blue tint, the blue lines would become orange, and the red line would become blue. The lines would also be thicker, which along with the color changes, would make it easier for officials to make quick and accurate calls on the ice.

Obviously this idea never went very far. The HSBC Arena in Buffalo gave it a try and it was used for an AHL game that was played there that season. Perhaps you are wondering why I bring up this old story in 2013...

I wanted to see what it might look like today had the new ice went into effect. The results are actually quite awful and further convinces me that they made the right call. Never-the-less, I thought I would share some of the possibilities with the Frozen Faceoff Community.

Forgotten Anniversaries Part 3

It is not uncommon to see anniversary logos on ice, but I thought it would be fun to take a look back at just some of the team's anniversary logos that never made it to center ice. What might they look like? Why didn't they paint it at center ice? Sometimes it is clear that they used good judgement in not using their celebratory logo at center ice. Let's take a look at part 3 of this series...  (also view Part 1 and Part 2)

New Edmonton Arena Concepts

A new arena is coming to downtown Edmonton in 2016, and now that arena has a name. Rogers Communications has purchased the naming rights for the future home of the Edmonton Oilers. It will be called Rogers Place.

The announcement comes on the heels of a new 12-year, $5.2-billion media rights agreement between the Rogers and the NHL. The deal, which is the largest in NHL history, gives Rogers national rights to all NHL games on all of its platforms in all languages.

Our thanks to Jacob New for pointing us to this story and suggesting we make some concepts for the new arena.  Here we go...

A few months ago our team had this idea of combining elements of old center ice designs with today's rules and logos. We wanted to see what the center ices might look like today if teams were still playing in their old arenas, yet still show the progression of ice format changes. Here is we came up with...

What Does The Ref Say?

Recently the Charlotte Checkers had an idea to show what it is like to be a ref in the AHL.
Referee David Banfield wears a GoPro helmet cam, giving an up close and personal look at what happens on the ice during a game. The video was shot during the annual Teddy Bear Toss game on Dec. 7, 2013, with the help of microphones on both Banfield and linesman Paul Carnathan, and was produced by the Checkers.
